Setting Camp

First day at Yellowstone

I actually had to drive through Yellowstone to get to Montana so I had a somewhat “lay of the land” my first day. My first day at my site was Saturday Sept 15. I planned on staying in Yellowstone for at least 7 days so I spent that first day organizing old Peace Train ‘77(my rv) and getting ready to spend the next week in one spot.

I spoke to a ranger and he told me that the weather had been dipping into the 20’s on some nights and that peoples tanks had iced up on their RVs. Well I knew it was gonna get cold but wasn’t quite ready for that. My 1977 13’ Trillium is as started not much more than hard shell tent. I do not have running water so that is not a concern, but the cold temperatures that could be a challenge. I do not have any hookups (electric, water, sewage) at my spot, although the only thing I can use is electric via an extension cord which is a big help for lights and charging etc.

The camper has an old original furnace in it that I turned on once and within minutes set off my carbon monoxide meter and damn near melted the interior of the camper so, I pretty much have ruled using that source of heat out. In its place I purchased a small propane heater that uses the 1 lb propane bottles. I have two 20lb propane tanks with me and purchased a connector to refill the 1lb bottles as needed. (The individual bottles are as much as $10 in some of these small towns) I do have a 400 watt solar generator and a solar panel, but as anyone who has ever paid and electric bill knows anything that produces heat uses a lot of power. So electric heaters are out. #yellowstone #camping #RV

In most of the places I am staying there is no cell service or WiFi which comes along with going off grid, so my posts will have some latency.
